Navigating the Teenage Fitness Boom: Balancing Enthusiasm with Safety
By Kidztivity

In a world increasingly driven by social media and digital influence, the gym has become a new social hub for teenagers. During a recent visit to the gym, recovering from an injury, I found myself on a bike for a rehabilitation session. This unusual perspective allowed me to observe the vibrant mix of young fitness enthusiasts, ranging from ages 12 to their early 20s. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy, yet it was clear that some adults felt a bit uneasy with groups of teenagers taking over ‘their’ space. While it’s fantastic to see the younger generation embracing fitness, there are pressing concerns about safety and guidance that we, as an industry, must address.

The Social Media Influence:

Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok are reshaping how teenagers view fitness. While the exposure to healthy lifestyles is a positive development, there’s an underlying pressure to achieve the “perfect” body image portrayed online. This has led to a scenario where teenagers often prioritise lifting the heaviest weights or performing advanced exercises, not necessarily for personal growth, but to showcase their feats to followers, or with the vague expectation that they’ll get the body aspired to from scrolling on socials. The question remains, are they doing it for the right reasons?

The Role of Gym Instructors:

Gym instructors have a pivotal role in guiding these young individuals. However, understanding the unique needs of teenagers, especially during growth spurts and puberty, requires specialised training, something that is currently limited. The fitness industry must invest in educating instructors to provide the right support and advice to teenagers, ensuring their safety and long-term well-being.

The Importance of Parental Role Models:

During my quite frankly dull gym rehab session, I observed a father and son duo working out together. While it’s heartening to see families engaging in fitness activities, it was concerning that no one was there to correct poor techniques or provide guidance. The father was completing kettlebell squats with terrible technique, his son was copying with even worse technique! Encouraging teenagers to exercise with their parents is a positive step, but it must be supported with supervised sessions where knowledgeable instructors can offer structured programmes and guidance. This approach ensures that teenagers experience the benefits of exercise without the risk of injury, maintaining their enthusiasm for fitness.

Industry-Wide Commitment:

To truly nurture this growing fitness-focused generation, we need an industry-wide commitment to support teenagers. This includes offering specific training to staff and creating designated times, and in some instances, facilities, where expert guidance is available. Additionally, we must ensure consistent and safe messaging through online influencers. A proposed Teen Fitness Charter could standardise the information shared, promoting safe practices both in physical gyms and online. Action starts now, and I’m appealing to all those across the sector, to reach out and commit to supporting this initiative…

Conclusion:

Teenagers are swapping pubs and clubs for the gym, embracing fitness in a social context. It’s an exciting shift, but we must ensure our sector is prepared to support this change. By fostering a safe and informed environment, we can help teenagers build a lifelong passion for fitness. Physical businesses and online influencers, it’s time to get on board, let’s work together to create a supportive and empowering fitness culture for the next generation…
