The Pros and Cons of Incorporating Technology into Children’s Activities

Technology plays a significant role in shaping the way children engage in various activities. From educational apps to interactive toys and gadgets, tech-enabled equipment and online apps have become a big part of children’s playtime and learning experiences. While these advancements offer exciting opportunities, they also come with a set of advantages and disadvantages. In this blog, we will run through the pros and cons of using online apps and tech-enabled equipment in children’s activities.

The Pros

Enhanced Learning Opportunities

Educational apps and games can make learning fun and engaging, helping children acquire new skills and knowledge such as increased hand-eye co-ordination, improve creativity, decision-making and problem-solving, along with general computer fluency. Interactive devices can also adapt to a child’s desired skill level, providing more personalised learning experiences, leaving the child more likely to return and enjoy the game as they find it achievable yet challenging. Adapting certain in-person activities is often difficult, especially in a group setting. The use of flexible online learning and tech-based equipment means each activity can be suited to any child based on their skillset or experience level.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

Tech can provide accessibility options for children with disabilities, making activities more inclusive and open for everyone. There are often scenarios where activities do not wholly cater to disabled or disadvantaged children, whereas a lot of tech-enabled equipment and online apps can bridge the gap. Features such as speech recognition and screen readers can assist SEN (special educational needs) children in learning and play, whilst tech-enabled equipment such as BlazePod can adapt to every disability, ability and skill set thanks to their flexible multi-activity setup.

Creativity and Exploration

Tech toys like programmable robots and digital art tools encourage creativity and exploration. Children can often paint pictures in their mind but find it difficult to express their thoughts on a blank page. With AI software and the advancing of technology, children can bring their ideas to life and start an artistic journey of creativity – something that may not have been possible with a simple pen and paper. Online apps, including coding platforms and creative software, also foster imaginative play. Tech-enabled equipment isn’t the only form of digital software that can inspire creativity – sometimes, simple apps and sites can allow children to explore a new activity or passion they never knew they had – which could see them go on to become a web designer, coder etc. Technology can expose children to professional careers and personal hobbies that they didn’t know could exist.

The Cons

Social Skills and Communication

Over-reliance on technology may hinder the development of essential social skills.

Spending too much time interacting with screens can limit face-to-face communication and emotional intelligence potentially leading to difficulties in forming meaningful relationships.

Recent research has shown that screen time is negatively associated with social skills development in toddlers. Specifically, the more time they spend with devices, the more their social development suffers, along with relating and interacting with others, compliance with directions, and ability to help others.

The conclusions from the BMC Public Health’s investigation into children and were clear. “Findings from this study suggest that screen time may be detrimental to social skills in early childhood”. It continued – “Promoting healthy physical activity and behaviour patterns early in life, in particular around screen-based behaviour, may be important.”

Digital Addiction and Distraction

Excessive use of technology, particularly interactive and highly engaging apps and games, can lead to digital addiction.

Children might struggle to disconnect from their devices, impacting their focus on other essential activities like schoolwork and physical play.

Technology negatively impacts kids if they spend so much time on screens that they skimp on eating, sleeping, doing their homework, or spending time with friends and family. Research suggests that heavy social media use can also be a risk factor for anxiety and depression in teenagers.

Privacy and Security Concerns

Children’s online activities can raise privacy and security concerns.

Without proper guidance, children might share personal information or engage with potentially harmful individuals online.

Children must be fully educated about the dangers of internet surfing, social media and using a digital device before they use any applications or technology. This helps to ensure they can protect themselves from identity theft, invasion of privacy, cyberbullying, offensive images and messages, and online grooming.

Finding the Balance

Incorporating technology into children’s activities can be a double-edged sword, but finding the right balance is key. Here are a few strategies to strike that balance!

Setting Limits

Establish clear rules for screen time and ensure children are engaging in a variety of activities both on and off screens. Having a mixture of online and offline content will see children’s needs catered for at all times, as they can enjoy the active side of activities, whilst the relaxing laid-back approach to online learning.

Prioritising Quality Content

Curate a selection of high-quality, age-appropriate apps, games, and videos that promote learning and creativity. Due to the huge range of content available, this shouldn’t be too difficult, but be sure to research any apps or games you haven’t experienced or used before, also considering what the children will enjoy and find useful in comparison to offline learning activities.

Lead by Example

As is always the case when delivering a course or programme to children, the provider should always lead by example. But that especially applies when delivering courses that involve online courses. If you, as a provider, can demonstrate the importance of finding the balance between using a mobile device and switching off regularly, it will help with keeping screen times down, in turn keeping them away from any potentially harmful content, and generally help implement healthy habits.
