The

Brief

GLL Greenwich Leisure Limited approached Kidztivity to provide comprehensive training for all staff working with children and young people at their newly refurbished facility. GLL Sobell had recently installed an impressive array of new equipment including:

  • A brand new state-of-the-art trampoline and inflatable zone
  • A 3-story strike zone with interactive sports pitch
  • An amazing active (soft)play area designed specifically for under 10’s

Rather than having their team simply facilitate access to these facilities, GLL wanted their staff to actively engage and interact with visiting children and young people. The goal was to transform their team from passive supervisors into active engagement specialists who could maximise the potential of the new equipment while creating memorable experiences for every visitor.

The

Challenge

The primary challenge for Kidztivity was ensuring these brand new facilities were utilised to their absolute full potential. We needed to help GLL’s team see beyond the equipment’s intended purpose and discover creative ways to prevent children and young people from becoming disengaged.

The key challenges included:

  • Building staff confidence in actively engaging with children and young people
  • Creating a welcoming environment where visitors feel safe, special, and supported in making new friendships
  • Developing activities that would encourage return visits and build customer loyalty
  • Ensuring all activities were inclusive and adaptable for different ages and abilities
  • Maximising the versatility of the new equipment through innovative programming

The

Approach

Despite initial delays due to the facilities not being fully completed, Kidztivity took a hands-on approach to understanding the unique requirements. A pre-visit to assess the equipment and facilities in person proved invaluable in developing our comprehensive training solution.

Programme Development: We created entirely new activities with built-in progressions and adaptations, ensuring inclusivity for all abilities. Each activity was documented on easy-to-follow activity cards that the GLL team could understand and confidently deliver.

Comprehensive Workshop Design: Kidztivity designed a bespoke version of their Kick-Start Workshop combining theoretical and practical learning elements customised to the amazing new facilities at the centre:

Theoretical Components:

  • Interactive peer-to-peer activities to build team confidence
  • Understanding child development and how children and young people think and learn
  • Communication strategies for different age groups
  • Safety considerations and risk management

Practical Components:

  • Hands-on experience using the brand new facilities
  • Physical demonstration of activities and games from the custom activity cards
  • Volunteer-led mini sessions to build real-world confidence
  • Role-playing scenarios to prepare staff for various situations

This blended approach ensured the GLL team felt completely comfortable and confident when interacting with children and young people, ultimately creating an environment that would encourage repeat visits and positive word-of-mouth recommendations.
