Sporting Equals promote ethnic diversity across sport and physical activity, and the only organisation in the UK to do so. Originally set up in 1998 by Sport England, in partnership with the Commission for Racial Equality, Sporting Equals are now a fully independent body and a national partner of Sport England.
Sporting Equals exists to empower organisations, individuals as well as communities to become an active part of change, to achieve their full potential and promote a more active and healthier lifestyle. They have been incremental in implementing change within sport already but “constantly strive to elevate and enhance the opportunities available to the Ethnically Diverse Communities.”
The
Brief
As part of a collaboration with Sporting Equals and their ‘Future Female Leaders in Sport’ programme, Kidztivity would this time train local females looking to make it in the industry, who have previously not had the opportunities in the past.
Incorporating dance, boxing, basketball, and other physical activities, Kidztivity helped deliver an extra-special Kids Activator course that left a group of women with the confidence to lead their own children’s activity courses in the future.
The
Challenge
While 46.2% of the London population is ethnically diverse, only 12% of coaches are. In an effort to address this, Sporting Equals provided fully funded Level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications for a group of ethnically diverse women across 15 boroughs of London. The sports they are qualified in ranges from football to hockey, boxing to climbing and many more. Kidztivity adapted and customised the popular Kids Activator course to best suit the brief provided by Sporting Equals, whilst also taking into account the level of experience of the participants.
The
Approach
In March 2023, our Master Trainer, Charlotte Owen, supported by two of our training specialists Becca Golightly and Sarah Beresford, delivered a specialised Kids Activator course in London – something which Charlotte and our other Master Trainers have similarly completed across the UK and Europe.
Kidztivity Master Trainer, Charlotte Owen, described the women as “Inspirational, daring and empowering females who, thanks to Sporting Equals, have been given a platform, along with an opportunity to break down the barriers and have a positive impact in their local communities.”
“The Sporting Equals participants were so fun to work with and were really engaged throughout the training. Each participant had their own story to share, and collectively the group had overcome a number of challenges to get to the position they were in today. Although my role was to educate, I learnt so much from each of the women and was inspired by every one of their stories. I can’t wait to follow their journeys and see what they go on to achieve.”
Sporting Equals Projects Coordinator, Caoimhe Heath, was full of praise for the work Kidztivity delivered. “The coaching course provided by Kidztivity was the perfect blend of fun and learning. Not only did the Future Female Leader participants get to step out of their comfort zone, but they also had the opportunity to develop their skills and learn new techniques to take into their coaching sessions. Kidztivity went above and beyond to meet our needs and provided three specialised workshops to support our participants including, fitness, boxing and dance. It’s safe to say they all had an incredible time.”
One of the Project Coordinators for Sporting Equals commented on the activities, “Thank you so much for this weekend, it was so lovely meeting the Kidztivity Team. The candidates seemed really engaged and excited by the content! I think the feedback we received yesterday from Leanne said it all. I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to coaching for them, ahead of their 10-week delivery. Thanks again, look forward to working with you in the future.”
A Sporting Equals Future Female Leaders in Sport participant also commented on their experience.
“The course content was engaging and broad enough to apply to all of us and the different backgrounds/aspirations we have. The delivery was so welcoming, encouraging and inclusive. The pace at which Charlotte ran the course, adapted sessions, and was so understanding of everyone’s circumstances was really apparent and appreciated. Thank you for a great weekend that has given me much to reflect on.”
Another participant commented on the workshop: “The delivery was so welcoming, encouraging and inclusive. The teachers were very informative, lots of ideas and procedures were explained, they were really knowledgeable and made us feel comfortable. I had a really good time.”
A few weeks after Kidztivity delivered the specialised Kids Activator course, Sporting Equals invited us to Nike London for the Future Female Leaders Event, celebrating those who took the course and everyone who helped along the way.
The Results
Sporting Equals provided some stats that have come to fruition since the FFL event:
- 307 people coached by our candidates across a minimum of 15 boroughs of London already
- 37% of participants stated that they felt more inspired to coach since taking part in coaching sessions led by an FFL candidate.
- 77% reported that they felt more confident since taking part in coaching sessions led by an FFL candidate.
- 100% reported an improvement in their overall health (mental, physical and social) since taking part in coaching sessions led by an FFL candidate.
